The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly criticised the Federal Government over its recently released terrorism sponsors list, describing the development as a deliberate attempt to undermine its credibility both locally and internationally.
In a detailed statement issued on April 13, 2026, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said the list lacks substance and fails to address what the group described as the real issues affecting Nigeria’s security landscape.
The group, under the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu, argued that the move raises questions about the standards and evidence used in compiling such a sensitive document, warning that misclassification could weaken genuine counter-terrorism efforts.
IPOB further accused the government of attempting to reshape public perception by portraying the group as a security threat, despite its consistent claim of being a peaceful movement advocating for self-determination.
According to the statement, the organisation believes the publication is part of a broader strategy aimed at discouraging its supporters and influencing international opinion against its activities.
The group referenced past incidents involving security operations in the South-East, suggesting that such actions contradict the government’s stance on protecting citizens and maintaining law and order.
IPOB also reiterated its position that its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, remains central to its struggle, noting concerns over his continued detention and how it relates to the broader agitation.
The statement stressed that the group’s activities are rooted in what it described as internationally recognised rights, adding that its operations in some foreign countries comply with local laws, contrary to the narrative it says is being promoted.
Furthermore, IPOB warned that labeling individuals or groups without clear and verifiable proof could have far-reaching consequences, including damaging reputations and escalating tensions.
Despite the controversy, the group maintained that it would not be deterred, emphasizing that its campaign for justice, dignity, and self-determination remains unchanged.
IPOB concluded by calling on the international community to critically assess the situation and avoid being influenced by what it described as one-sided narratives.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government has yet to respond officially to IPOB’s latest claims.
