The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has defended the dissolution of its 3rd Administration of the Directorate of State (DOS), insisting that the decision was constitutional and fully within the powers of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued on Saturday by IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group described the controversy surrounding the dissolution as “unfortunate and unnecessary,” stressing that the IPOB Code of Conduct remains the supreme governing instrument of the movement.
According to the statement, the Directorate of State was established by Kanu as an administrative body responsible for the day-to-day management of IPOB affairs and does not possess authority independent of the organisation’s leadership.
The group maintained that the DOS derives its legitimacy and powers from the IPOB Constitution and the authority of the Supreme Leader, arguing that no administrative structure within the movement can claim superiority over the Code of Conduct.
IPOB cited provisions of its Code of Conduct, which it said grant the leader exclusive powers to appoint, suspend, or dismiss principal officers, except where such authority has been expressly delegated.
The organisation argued that the dissolution of the 3rd DOS administration automatically terminated the tenure of all officers affected by the decision, adding that there is no constitutional provision allowing dismissed officials to challenge or reject such actions.
“The issue before IPOB family members worldwide is not whether they agree or disagree with the dissolution. The issue is whether the Constitution of IPOB remains supreme,” the statement read.
The group further noted that appointments within the movement are temporary, performance-based, and voluntary, adding that officers do not acquire permanent rights to any position.
IPOB also rejected suggestions that the dissolved administration could continue to exercise authority, insisting that any such actions would fall outside the constitutional framework of the organisation and could attract disciplinary measures.
The movement announced that the 4th Administration of the Directorate of State, headed by Chris Nwaọgụ, has been duly constituted and is now fully operational.
It directed all IPOB structures worldwide to recognise and cooperate with the new administration in carrying out its responsibilities.
The statement concluded by urging members to remain calm, disciplined, and loyal to the IPOB Constitution and the leadership of Kanu, reiterating that the Code of Conduct remains the highest authority within the organisation.
